Our two recently published ‘Books of the Month’, in partnership with Potterton Books, are by designers whose style epitomises the design lifestyle ‘Eclectic Fusion’, each in their own highly individual way. One is by a fresh and eclectic designer and the other a highly creative architect and designer.
So, what is Eclectic Fusion? We see it as a mix of artistic styles and pieces from different periods that unite to create a cohesive, relaxed sometimes bohemian look.
Lorenzo Castillo – £58
Lorenzo Castillo is a prestigious interior designer and decorator known for his classic, fresh and eclectic taste. An exquisite antiquarian, historian and art dealer, he is passionate about mixing the classical with the contemporary.
As one of the foremost designers today, he has carried out projects all over the world, from the Dominican Republic to Florence and New York. He has designed and decorated houses, hotels, restaurants and shops.
This coffee-table book, devoted exclusively to his professional career, is illustrated with photographs of nine of his most important projects, taken by Manolo Yllera – a photographer whose work is as extensive as it is eclectic.
We love all the projects featured, especially Castillo’s fabulous apartment located on Calle Magdalena in Madrid. The interior captures the essence of eclectic fusion perfectly. A portrait from the early 18th century hung above a plastic Italian table from the 1960s. A glass-roofed courtyard full of lush greenery. A classical staircase with two tone marble floor and 1940s chandelier above.
Ray Booth: Evocative Interiors – £42.50
Trained as an architect, designer Ray Booth’s distinctively elegant, strikingly evocative spaces exude modernism while reflecting a sense of place and history. Booth’s creativity is palpable in spectacular homes demonstrating his ability to harmonize open-plan interiors with the surrounding landscape.
Presented here are Booth’s most celebrated Nashville residences and never-before-seen projects in Palm Beach, Louisiana, New York, Texas and the Hamptons. Each illustrates his innovative use of furniture as architecture to define rooms, draperies in place of walls, captivating displays of art and mirrors and an eclectic mix of antiques and contemporary pieces.
In a ‘Texas State of Mind’ (p184) Booth takes an existing structure down to a skeletal state to create a beautiful family home featuring a mix of contemporary pieces and antiques. When using contrasting elements the challenge, Booth explains, is finding a harmonious balance.
