Chequer floors are a distinctive and classic design whose origins date back to antiquity. Bold and beautiful, they bring a geometric pattern to spaces that exude integrity and quality.
They can be used for virtually any interior space from creating drama in a hallway to elevating the design aesthetic of a swimming pool. In this Journal article, we explore the myriad of options now available to the interior designer.
From terracotta, marble and limestone to reclaimed and porcelain – we have something for everyone and if we don’t, we can create a bespoke chequer to your exact requirements, even mixing materials. For example, a Lapicida client recently used terracotta and stone together for their interior. Just make contact with our expert team to explore endless options to suit your project.

DRAMATIC ENTRANCES
What better way to start our journey of chequer exploration than the moment you enter a home. This marvelous monochromatic hallway features an instantly impactful black and white chequer floor.
Antique Marble Arabescato and Antique Marble Nero Marquina tiles from our award-winning Antique Marble porcelain range replicate natural marble. They are perfectly proportioned and draw the eye and you into the space.
CHEQUER CUCINA
Kitchens needn’t be plain utilitarian places. They are the perfect opportunity to make a statement with a chequer floor.
You can keep the look like this one – soft, rustic, yet contemporary with carefully selected contrasting square tiles to create a feature chequer floor.
You can achieve an effect like this with our terracotta collection. Very Mediterranean in feel.

LIVING THE DREAM
If you dream of having warm and earthy tones in your main living space, but are concerned it might look a little bland, consider a chequer floor using slightly contrasting mid tones.
Inspired by the subtle stone hues of the sun-drenched Mediterranean landscape, the Med Stone range of Italian porcelain tiles replicate aged limestone.
Here, Med Stone Dor and Med Stone Byblos alternate subtly to create a sophisticated yet relaxed and comfortable chequer.
OPENING UP SPACE
What we admire so much about chequer patterned floors is their ability to give floors direction and lead the eye. If you are a fan of open plan living, chequer floors are a godsend. They not only add impact, they also draw you through from one space to another.
This contemporary example uses a classic Black & White which key perfectly with the black Crittall doors. The dogs can’t help admiring them, too.

MARBLE MAKES A SPLASH
If you are fortunate enough to have a home with a swimming pool or are creating one, do consider a chequer floor.
With the look of reclaimed marble, our Venetian Black and White marble chequer adds the luxurious aesthetic of a classical Roman spa, particularly when complementing pillars as shown here.
Specified with a tumbled and honed finish, rather than polished, it is highly practical too, preventing light bouncing and providing a less slippery surface.

BEAUTIFULLY PRACTICAL
Chequer floors also make great commercial sense. Take this restaurant example. The proprietor wanted a stylish yet hardwearing flooring solution that would look warm and inviting whilst standing up to the rigours, spills and constant use of a busy and successful restaurant.
The designer opted for the sophisticated rusticism of an Elements Earth Calce and Ocra porcelain chequer floor with a unique textured finish, similar to decorative plaster. It evokes the feel of exquisite Renaissance period Italian frescoes.
